979. One of the Muggleborns enchants some blue-bound books to act like Tumblr, and then distributes them to all their Muggleborn friends. Word gets out and they’re forced to make more, and then the purebloods get into it and the staff members are so confused, what the heck is ‘Hogblr’? Why are they all talking about their ‘feels’? They have no clue, except for Flitwick. He’s the John Green of Hogblr.

31 Days of Halloween
Literary Witchcraft

One of the season’s biggest buzz books is The Penguin Book of Witches, edited by Katherine Howe, a collection of historical accounts and documents that “provides a unique tour through the darkest history of English and North American witchcraft.” The book makes for fascinating reading as the first-hand accounts giving a chilling glimpse into the real stories behind the legends. In The Daylight Gate, written for the legendary Hammer Studios new publishing venture, Jeanette Winterson spins an enthralling and suspenseful tale based upon the historical Lancashire Witch Trials, historical fiction a la Wolf Hall but with a supernatural twist. Conjure Wife by Fritz Leiber tells of a hyper-rational college professor Norman Saylor, who forces his wife to give up her superstitious witchery; soon afterwards, their lives start to fall apart. John Updike indulged in his darkest fantasies in The Witches of Eastwick. Roald Dahl’s classic The Witches is a delightfully unsentimental children’s book in which a boy and his grandmother seek to eradicate the world of evil, child-hating sorceresses. Wicked, and its sequels, by Gregory Maguire, served to make one of the most evil and feared of all fictional characters sympathetic (and gave us some great musical numbers as well). Finally, there is the bestselling All Souls Trilogy from Deborah Harkness, who visited our store this past August for the release of the concluding volume in the series, The Book of Life.
